Characteristics:

- pale blue flower, typically deeper blue than S. firmum
- stem often strongly purplish or purplish blotches on stem at leaf axils

- internodes typically longer than S. firmus; a more open, loose appearance
- non–sticky flower head; bracts not as conspicuous
