Characteristics:

- small, light blue to almost white flowers
- very late–flowering (last to bloom in Michigan)
- vaguely like a bushy S. lanceolatus
- leaves are long, narrow, and not clasping
- lateral rhizomes
- slight roundness of stem
- conspicuous reticulate "net" venation of the undersides of the leaves,
similar to Doellingeria umbellata
- localized; found mostly in moist lakeplain prairies of SE Michigan
