Characteristics:
- FACU (but can be a dominant in Michigan wetlands)
- Michigan C Value: 0 (not native to Michigan)
- large–headed perennial
- robust, up to 2m tall
- may initially be mistaken for native sunflower species
- enormous leaves may at first glance look similar to Silphium terebinthinaceum (native prairie dock)
- massive root
- native to central Eurasia
