- very facultative woodland species; can be common in upland areas of rich forests
- when its little seeds are mature, they can have enough tension to launch (the seed "jumps")
as much as 3 meters when disturbed
- sheath on stem
- flowers do not touch each other
- tip of each flower points straight down
