- one of the largest herbaceous species
- widely spreading and bushy

- large inflorescence of many umbels of purple black fruit
- individual umbels usually less than 2.5 cm broad,
though occasionally nearly 3 cm broad when fruiting
- often in rich, moist hardwood forests
- especially along edges and clearings
