Characteristics:
- OBL
- Michigan C Value: 5
- also known as Carex rostrata
- usually more robust than C. vesicaria
- lacks reflexed perigynia
- perigynia up to 150 per spikelet
- perigynia shiny, few–nerved, inflated
- perigynia pale yellow to golden brown, ovoid, up to 7mm long
- spongy–based culms
- smooth or only slightly scabrous culms
- culms up to 1.2m tall
- large seedhead looks vaguely similar to a tiny,
bare "ear of corn" with beaks on the seeds
- flowers from May through early June
- native
