  • spikelets crowded with up to 100+ perigynia

  • spikelets up to 4cm long

  • perigynia up to 9mm long, 4mm thick, yellow–brown, membranous

  • culms to 1m high

  • often in sandy, acidic soils

  • only rarely occurring with Carex hystericina

  • bottom spikes less drooping than Carex hystericina

  • flowers from May to July

  • native
