Characteristics:
- OBL

- none of the perigynia are reflexed
- spikelets crowded with up to 100+ perigynia
- spikelets up to 4cm long
- perigynia up to 9mm long, 4mm thick, yellow–brown, membranous
- culms to 1m high
- often in sandy, acidic soils
- only rarely occurring with Carex hystericina
- bottom spikes less drooping than Carex hystericina
- flowers from May to July
- native
