Characteristics:
- FACU
- Michigan C Value: 4
- sessile florts are very small (3mm to 3.5mm long)
- florest have straight awn
- a common grass of open sandy fields and juniper savannas
- occasionally in mesic areas
- closely resembles Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem).
- can be distinguished superficially by the visibly
expanded spathe like sheath mostly enclosing the racemes.
- older stems are often reddish bronze,
and are conspicuous late into the winter
